EVEN AS the district administration here served eviction notices on the tenants of the erstwhile Raja of Mehmudabad, some of these occupants seem prepared to take on their blue-blooded landlord in the court.

That a consensus on the issue among the 57-odd tenants was missing became apparent when HT Lucknow Live spoke to a couple of the oldest occupants of the Mehmudabad Estate. “We have not been able to meet the Raja as he is out of town. But we have met his legal advisor in the city and he has told us that he (Raja) we would meet us only after the court notices have been served,” said an owner of a commercial establishment in Mehmudabad Mansion opposite Halwasiya Market requesting anonymity.

But from whatever feedback they have received from those close to the scion of Mehmudabad, it appears that the latter is really very annoyed with such tenants, who have vandalised and encroached on the property, he added.

But then wasn’t that all the more reason for tenants like him to plead their case before the court. The owner evaded the query. “Look, you cannot expect a person, who has been living since 1954 in a premises just to pack his back within a week and leave when he has nowhere to go. Obviously, we are going to plead that we should be given some more time but it all depends,” he commented.
