Fed up with the lackadaisical attitude of the government authorities towards basic civic infrastructure and other governance issues, all resident bodies in Gurgaon have for the first time become united under one unified body – the Gurgaon United Residents Movement (GURM).
Setting aside their differences, over 250 resident organisations functioning in their individual capacity have decided to take up the issues with the state government as well as the elected representatives jointly for optimum response.
On Monday, representatives of the Joint Action Forum of RWAs (JAFRA), Federation of All Residents Welfare Association (FORWA), Gurgaon Citizens Council, Sanyukt Kalyan Parishad, Federation of Senior Citizens, Citizens Alliance and others held a meeting and formed GURM.
“We have derived inspiration from Hindustan Times's Gurgaon Collapsing series that showed that a persistent effort could only wake up the state government from its slumber. In the past, various resident forums had been raising infrastructure and governance-related issues with the authorities, who gave a damn about it. But now the authorities will have no option but to listen to us as we all have decided to get united under the umbrella of GURM,” said Col. Rattan Singh, the chairman of JAFRA that alone claims to be representing about 150 resident bodies in Gurgaon.
