Thorny differences between key yoga schools were resolved to evolve the universal protocol of the 15 asanas that thousands will perform at Yoga Day exhibition on Sunday.
“The same asanas are performed differently in different institutions. We accepted some techniques from Ramdev, some from HR Nagendra’s S-VYASA and Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra,” a senior AYUSH ministry official told HT.
For instance, the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, the government’s yoga-training centre, does Tadasana — the first asana to be performed on Sunday — differently. “We teach students to keep palms open but on June 21 we will perform it with hands interlocked,” said Ishwar Basavareddi, director of the institute. Techniques for asanas like Sasankasana and Bhujangasana also vary.
A cautious government has also decided that none of the four key yoga gurus, who would be present at the dais, would lead the performance. “Four young people from Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga will lead the crowd,” said Ayush secretary Nilanjan Sanyal.
The Capital’s outdoor yoga session has created maximum buzz, with about 35,000 government employees, students and citizens expected to congregate on Raj Path, the city’s main boulevard near Rashtrapati Bhavan.
