At least six sadhus were injured on Thursday when Awahan Akhara’s two factions armed with swords and pistols clashed with each other during an internal election for four posts of ‘shree mahant’ at the Simhastha Kumbh, police said.
The injured – Rahul Puri, 25, Rajesh Puri, 62, Bholagiri, 70, Sanatan Puri, 30, Nagendra Puri, 40, and Raghav Puri, 35 – have been admitted to the district hospital where their condition is said to be out of danger.
Sources said the election for the four posts of Awahan Akhara was underway when the two groups got into an altercation which soon took a violent turn. The defeated group attacked the winners with swords and guns, they said, adding that a sadhu received a bullet injury.
Mahakal police station in-charge Anil Singh Chouhan said that police were recording the statements of the victims and other akhara members to identify the accused.
Japanese nationals fall ill at Kumbh
As many as 41 Japanese nationals visiting the Kumbh fair here took ill and were admitted to hospitals. “Twenty-six Japanese nationals were admitted to our hospital,” Dr Vinod Gupta of Mahavnagar area government hospital said on Thursday.
The rest were admitted to the government district hospital, he said, adding they suffered from dehydration, uneasiness, fever and diarrhoea. They were discharged after their condition improved this morning, Dr Gupta said. “They had come here yesterday and some of them didn’t even have breakfast. They were put up at the camp of Pilot Baba. Today, they left for Bhopal from where they are supposed to return home,” he added.
