Panic gripped local people after five live grenades were spotted near a water tank on the outskirts of Bawal village in Neemuch on Sunday night.
The village, just a kilometre away from the Central Reserve Police Force (CPRF) camp and 22km from district headquarters, has more than 3,000 people.
Neemuch district superintendent of police Manoj Kumar Singh said as soon as the news reached them, the CRPF jawans and a local police team rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.
All five grenades were immediately defused.
“It’s too early to draw any conclusion or to comment on the source grenades,” he added.
It is to be mentioned that after Uri attack and in the wake of escalating tension between India and Pakistan, the CRPF camp here, the biggest in the country, is under 24-hour drone surveillance.
Villagers living in the vicinity, however, have expressed concern over their safety. Janpad panchayat president Puran Ahir informed Hindustan Times that all five-live grenades were spotted near a water tank by the villagers.
Recalling similar incidents in the past, Ahir said that in 2005 two persons lost their lives in a blast near a hand pump. One Bakhtawar Singh was seriously injured in a blast. Two years later, one more blast took place in which one person died along with his cow.
