The Indore Municipal Corporation has pulled up telecom service provider Airtel for damaging a Narmada water feeder line while laying underground telephone lines in the city’s Bhawar Kuan area that disrupted supply in several city colonies for over 24 hours recently.

Indore city mayor Malini Gaud ordered Airtel and Avantika Gas Limited to immediately stop ongoing digging work in various parts of the city to lay phone lines and gas pipelines respectively, after she received several complaints from residents.

“It is a clear case of negligence; companies do not consult the municipal corporation before digging up roads. The corporation can provide maps of underground channels and lines to the companies,” Gaud said.

“There is a lack of co-ordination that cannot be allowed to happen over and over again,” she added.

The mayor has also ordered corporation officials to conduct an inspection at various places where companies were digging up roads for laying underground pipelines to check if they had obtained valid permissions.
