The couple are visibly upset as the treatment proved worse than the dog bite when a nurse allegedly broke the needle inside the victim’s body, triggering a series of surgeries which forced them to cancel their trip to meet their children in the U.S.

Prameela Nigote, wife of Ravindra Negote, resident of Indore’s Badi Gwaltoli locality, was bitten by a street dog on May 27. The couple rushed to a private hospital Mediplus Hospital and Research Centre for an anti-rabies shot.

But, the needle broke inside her body, which triggered a series of surgeries to extract the broken piece from the body, said advocate Indrajeet Bhatia. The treatment allegedly cost the couple around Rs 3 lakh.

But, more than the financial expenses was the mental trauma they had to undergo due to the entire incident for which they held the Indore Municipal Corporation for negligence in controlling stray dogs and the private hospital for negligent treatment which still gave them panic attacks, he said.

However, the Nigotes told HT that the hospital was trying to steer clear of its responsibility by blaming the manufacturer. They alleged that the needle broke as the nurse was busy more with cracking jokes with other staff members than administering the vaccine.

Advocate Bhatia said the couple would move the consumer court and file a criminal case in district court on Thursday.
