Among the list of 73 cities announced by union minister M Venkaiah Naidu, Indore is ranked 25, while the state capital Bhopal with 1336 points was ranked 21, Gwalior with 1235 points was ranked 30 and Jabalpur with 872 points stood at 63 in the table.

The survey was conducted in 73 major cities across the country that account for over 50 per cent of country’s urban population. The cities were ranked after mainly taking into account the conditions of municipal solid waste management (60 percent weightage); availability of public and individual toilets (15 percent weightage each); and public awareness about sanitation (10 percent weightage).

A three member team of Quality Council of India (QCI) visited the city in January and conducted inspections at as many as 42 places in the city to check the sanitation status of the city.

The findings of the survey revealed that 94 percent of city residents answered in affirmative when asked about having an individual household toilet. Only 10 percent of citizens feel the city is always clean. Only 16 percent are able to find dustbins on the streets; and 86 percent do not find public toilets, and 91 percent are dissatisfied with the availability of basic infrastructure at public/community toilets.

At planning level, the city for its strategy for open defecation free and integrated solid waste management scored 40 out of 50 points.
