District prosecuting officer Rajkumar Nema said additional session judge LD Solanki felt it was a rarest of rare crime due to its brutality — the victim was stabbed at least 15 times.

The incident took place on October 25, 2015, at Tarana town in Ujjain district when the convict, Kailash reached Malviya’s house to demand money from Chandrakanta when she was alone at home, said investigating officer sub-inspector Shivmurat Yadav.

When Chandrakanta refused, Kailash attacked her with a rock and then repeatedly stabbed her with a knife. Neighbours rushed to the house hearing her screams and caught the attacker before he could escape with his victim’s jewellery.

Babulal Malviya, who was the minister of state for the PWD in the Digvijaya Singh cabinet between 1998 and 2003, and his family members raised the possibility that there could be more people involved in a conspiracy behind the murder. However, when a narco analysis of the accused was conducted on Babulal Malviya’s request in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, it became clear that the accused acted alone and did not have any accomplice.
