The Indore metro will be implemented in a phased manner and will be a flexi-network allowing operation at considerably below maximum capacity, said sources associated with the project. Meanwhile, as the detailed project report (DPR) for metro systems in Indore and Bhopal nears completion, one can glean a bare bones outline of the project.
The total network length of the Indore metro will hover around 88 km. It will tot up an average speed of 35-40 kilometre per hour, par for the similar systems elsewhere in the country. Bangalore metro, for instance, has an average speed of 30 km per hour, according to Wikipedia.
The system will have approximately 80 stops, roughly one stop every 800 metres. "We want as many people to use the metro services as possible," said Rohit Gupta, managing director of Rohit Associates, consultants for Indore and Bhopal metro projects.
"Some lines will overlap and (will) use the same infrastructure," he added. Although some routes would, on the face of it, appear to be prime candidates for inclusion in the first phase due to anticipated passenger load.
Gupta said ridership would only be one of the factors. "The route construction is being finalised and we're looking into both technical and commercial aspects," he said. "The final routes would depend not just on ridership but also available right of way and several other factors," he stressed.
This, Rohit Gupta said, was the reason why the consultants were pressing for a flexi-approach. "Although the network would have a maximum capacity of 45,000 passengers per direction per hour it could operate on as few as 8,000 passengers" he said.
"Similarly, maximum carriage capacity of the train would be 1,000 passengers but operations could continue even if it were carrying half that number," said Gupta.
