Retired inspector Arjun Singh Parihar, 78, was killed at his residence in the city’s Vishnupura Colony on Thursday night while his wife, who works at a girls’ hostel nearby, was out, deputy inspector general Santosh Singh said.

According to family members, Parihar’s wife found her house ransacked and Rs 10,000 cash and three gold rings stolen, the DIG said.

A police official investigating the case said: “We are almost convinced that the miscreants were not looters but had some other motive which led to the murder.”

Police have also retrieved the CCTV footages of nearby areas.

“We have also retrieved some mobile call records, and further investigation in the case is going on,” said the official.

Sources said the accused had possibly done a reconnaissance before barging into the house of the retired official.
