This club has been organising one of the most famous Pujas of South Kolkata for several decades. “We are known for the grandeur in our pujas. This year will be no different,” said Dr Saptarshi Basu, organising secretary.
The theme is to recreate the simple, traditional community puja of yesteryears. The pandal will be built out of terracotta. The idol will be dressed in Bengal’s traditional red-bordered sari that symbolises holiness and festivity at the same time. The lighting, too, promises to be dramatic. The centre of attraction will be the Goddess in her familiar “Mrinmayee” avatar.
Anjan Ukil, general secretary of the club, came up with the concept. “The themed pandal is being created by Biman Saha, while the idol is being built by Pradip Pal. “The idol will be completely decked up in shabeki (traditional) style,” said Dr Basu, “For us, love and devotion for the goddess always comes first.”
