An Indian from Bengaluru, a telescope in Pune and a researcher in Canada united to capture the almost invisible – a signal from the early years of the universe.

It took six months of intense research on paper and then 20 hours at a telescope, for a scientist from Montreal and another from India to capture a signal from the most distant galaxy found so far.

Arnab Chakraborty, a postdoctoral researcher at the Trottier Space Institute of McGill University, and Nirupam Roy, an associate professor of physics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, used data from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Pune to detect a
