Girls from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second adopted village in Varanasi, Nagepur, who are undergoing training in martial arts, are now ready with an action plan to promote self-defence techniques.
After completing their training, they will form ‘self-defence sisters squads’ which will train girls in nearby areas including the PM’s first adopted village Jayapur.
A group of 60 girls is learning martial art under the guidance of trainer Ruby Pal at a summer camp being organised by an NGO. The month-long camp that began on May 20 is providing two-hour training to girls (6-8 am) in the age group of 12-20 years. As part of the session, girls are also learning spoken English during evening hours.
“The training has given a boost to our confidence. I have attended three training sessions so far. This is the best way to learn self-defence. After we complete our training, we will form squads to train other girls,” said Pooja, an undergraduate student.
“Many girls go to their college on bicycles. If someone tries to harass them, they can use self-defence techniques,” she said. The girls have devised a plan for the formation of squads for nearby villages under the guidance of social activist Nand Lal Master.

{{/usCountry}}After the training, five groups of 12 girls each will be formed which will hold week-long training sessions in nearby villages. Besides martial art, the teams will give tips to girls on dance and also share their views on education and other issues. “The objective of the training is to boost the confidence of girls. Nagepur girls are taking keen interest in martial arts,” Master said.
