Ferdinand, based on the 1936 illustrated children’s book, tells the tale of a ginormous bull who’d rather sniff the roses than square off against matadors.
The gentle creature (dubbed in dulcet tones by the wrestling superstar John Cena) is mistaken for a dangerous beast, torn from his adoptive flower farm family, and sent off to train for an upcoming face-off in Madrid.
Ferdinand’s steadfast refusal to resort to any form of violence makes him an ideal role model in an age of hatred and conflict. It also makes for plenty of hilarity, amid which the script subtly conveys its pacifist message.
The affable supporting voice cast includes Kate McKinnon as a misfit goat and Gina Rodriguez as the leader of a resourceful hedgehog trio.
The animation evokes beautifully the textures of the verdant Spanish countryside. The action sequences, however, are considerably less effective.
Ferdinand may not measure up to the standards set by such recent animated blockbusters as Inside Out or Coco. Still, the beloved bedtime story provides sufficient entertainment for the young at heart.
