Child drowns, mother survives after stroll on Juhu beach

They have ruled out a suicide attempt. The woman, Namrata Kavale, 28, was strolling on the beach with the toddler, Kavya, around 11.20am when they were pulled in by the strong currents, the police said.

A few minutes later, a photographer ran to alert the lifeguards.

Manohar Shetty, a lifeguard, said, “We were patrolling around 200 metres from where the woman was found with her child. The photographer told us the woman walked into the sea. We pulled them out with the help of the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force).”

Shetty and his colleagues tried to resuscitate Kavale and her baby. Only the woman responded to the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but the child remained motionless, the lifeguard said.

The duo was rushed to Cooper Hospital. The child was declared dead at the hospital.
