The suburb saw one of the highest instances of motor vehicle theft, at 85 cases, last year;14 of these have been solved. In one case in December 2016, the Mulund police investigating a vehicle theft traced three men to Navi Mumbai, Thane and as far as Bangalore for stealing music players from cars.

The Mulund police, which oversees 12 lakh people, said they recorded a drop in crime. “Around 70 less cases were registered in 2016, when compared to the year before that. There have been cyber fraud cases, but these were committed from far-off” said Rajaram Vhanmane, senior police inspector, Mulund police station.

But the police solved fewer cases last year. Of 533 cases filed, only 260, or 49% cases, were cracked.
