All roads in Andheri (West) are almost, always choked with vehicles and people. Little wonder then that the DN Nagar police station, which oversees three lakh people crammed into 2 sqkm, recorded the highest number of crimes among the 21 police stations that take care of the western suburbs. In 2016, 851 FIRs were registered at this police station.

Crowds and densely populated localities could be the reason, senior officers said. Divisional assistant commissioner of police, Arun Chavan, told Hindustan Times, “This area is huge and densely populated. Several slum pockets and illiteracy can be blamed for the rise in property disputes and assault cases.”

The police have also marked six areas as “sensitive”, almost all of them in or around slum areas like Gaodevi Dongar, Janata Colony, Gilbert Hill, Dhangarwada, Bharatnagar and Kamgar Nagar.

Sources, however, said crimes were also being recorded in the middle-class and affluent areas of Manish Nagar, Four Bungalow and JP Road.

The only solution to effectively tackle crime in a crowded area like this is to increase patrolling, Chavan said. “Thousands of people come to this area every day are large markets, and the busy crowded area outside Andheri railway station where street crimes like robbery, theft occur,” added Chavan. The officer said they are increasing police presence and patrolling to curb the crime

Another 351 cases here are under the head of “Other IPC crimes” which include crimes like molestation, kidnapping, fatal accidents, domestic violence, cheating and forgery, intimidation, IT Act.
