Two lakh people, and their bags, pockets, wallets and phones, make for plenty of loot at Ghatkopar’s Metro and local railway stations.

The Ghatkopar police station registered the highest number of cases, at 669, in the entire east region. But the police said most of these cases, especially of theft, were reported by the travelling population.
Theft was the most reported crime in this area 2016 (123), followed by assault (117), vehicle theft (61) and house-break-ins at night (55). The police solved just about 58 % of the cases.
Officer, however, said major crimes were being cracked. The police station saw two murder cases, both of which were solved, three attempt to murder cases were solved, and of 20 cases of rape, 19 were solved.
Venkat Patil, senior police inspector at the Ghatkopar police station said, “Population here has gone up, hence more cases are being recorded. There is a lot of moving population as well, because several main roads, a railway stations and the Metro cut through Ghatkopar.”
