Family of Kalyan youth who ‘joined ISIS’ shares call details with NIA

The Tandel family received a call from an unidentified caller on Saturday night, telling them that Aman was “martyred”.

The family of Aman Tandel, one of the four youth from Kalyan who went to Iraq in May 2014 to reportedly join the Islamic State (IS), told the National Investigation Agency that they received a call from Iraq informing them about Tandel’s death in an air strike.

The Tandel family received a call from an unidentified caller on Saturday night, telling them that Aman was “martyred”.

Tandel parents said, “We have told the NIA about the call’s details. The caller spoke to us in English, but was fumbling on the phone.”

Aman’s uncle said, “We were having dinner when we got a call on our landline. The caller said Aman was martyred in an air strike. Aman’s father Naeem answered the call but when he asked who the caller was, he hung up.”

His family hopes that the news is false. “We want our son to return home as soon as possible. We were tired of answering questions about our son and even changed our residence as relatives and others would keep asking us about his whereabouts,” said his parents, adding, “We have given the NIA officials all the details we are aware of.”

A shop owner, who knows Tandel, said, “It’s very sad that Aman reportedly joined the ISIS. We earlier presumed the boys had gone for a pilgrimage to Baghdad. We were shocked to know the developments.”

“This incident has made me cautious. I check my children’s mobile phones to ensure that they are in no way being radicalized,” he added.
