The Ganpati festival this year will turn into a mini-break for students as most schools will be closed for more than a week this year, with Ganpati celebrations coinciding with the weekend and the Bakri-Eid holiday.
Schools have been drawing flak from political parties for a couple of years now for not giving more than a few of days off for the festival, prompting most of them to announce three-day holidays from September 6 to 9, besides staying shut on Ganesh Chaturthi on September 5.
This means schools will resume classes on September 12.
Schools are giving longer Ganpati breaks after a state government resolution last September stated holidays should be planned after consulting with the Parents Teachers Association (PTA). The resolution was issued after the Maharashtra Navanirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) demanded a five-day vacation for Ganpati.
RN Podar School (CBSE), Santacruz, has declared five-day additional holidays for Ganpati. “We have been spared from confusion this year as the choice to declare them was left to the school,” said Avnita Bir, principal of the school, adding exams will be held immediately after the break on September 19.
The Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE) has instructed its 150-odd schools to announce three to four more days. “We told schools not to cringe on Ganpati holidays, as we have to respect the sentiments of our brethren,” said Father Francis Swamy, principal, St Mary’s School (ICSE), Mazgaon and joint-secretary, ABE. St Mary’s will be closed on September 15, Anantha Chaturdashi as well. Francis added that the schools will be observing September 13 as Bakri-Eid, as it has been declared as a government holiday.
