The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in north Konkan coast, including Mumbai, from Thursday to Sunday.
The IMD issued warnings to the Maharashtra and Gujarat governments on Wednesday regarding the presence of a stationary low pressure area – a weather system — over the Gujarat region, which will be active from Thursday and lead to extreme rainfall for Gujarat coast and very heavy rain for the Konkan coast.
Officials from the weather bureau said moderate to heavy rain has been predicted for other parts of the state including Marathwada and south Konkan regions. “Our weather models have shown that the low pressure area over Gujarat will be pulling a lot of moisture from the sea along the Gujarat and north Konkan coastline in Maharashtra. The system will be active from July 13 and 14 till July 16,” said Shubhangi Bhute, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, IMD Mumbai. “The Gujarat and Maharashtra governments have been informed about the increase in rainfall activity and weather synoptic situation to avoid any untoward incidents.”
She added that warnings have been issued to the fishing community so that they avoid entering the sea in the next five days.
Meanwhile, the city has been experiencing a dry spell for the past 10 days. “Owing to lack of weather systems that were active during June, the amount of rainfall reduced. However, we expect the predicted showers to bridge the deficit,” said Bhute.
