Hit by WannaCry ransomware, civic body in Mumbai suburb to take 3 more days to fix computers

Three days after the computer system of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) was attacked by the WannaCry ransomware virus, the Information Technology (IT) department of the civic body is still working on its recovery.

The word and excel files of 25 computers which were online or did not have their anti virus updated were attacked by the virus last week. The entire IT system in KDMC has been shut since Friday evening.

“Our technical department is working on recovering data from the computes which were infected with the virus. It will take another three days for the entire recovery process,” said E Ravendiran, commissioner of KDMC.

Soon after the attack, the civic officials were asked to not use internet. Their systems were shut down, and officials were asked to continue with their work offline. “This will affect the daily routine work of the civic body, as muchof the information is stored in the computers by our officials. It will slow down the work process,” added Thoraskar.
