Maharashtra governor and chancellor of universities in the state Ch Vidyasagar Rao on Thursday asked universities in the state, and the colleges affiliated to them, to shift to electronic transfers or transactions while accepting fees from students or while dealing with stakeholders.

The direction comes in the wake of the central government’s push for cashless transactions to tide over the cash crisis.

Each university has also been asked to start a drive to create awareness among the students and their parents about the various methods of money transfers and electronic transactions.

“The governor has not set a date by when cashless transactions should be implemented, but he expects universities and colleges to adopt this system at the earliest. As of now, there is no deadline set as universities will need time to set up such mechanisms,” said a Raj Bhavan official.
