Mumbai university grants autonomous status to Ruia College

Mumbai city news: The autonomy will expire after five years and the college will be subjected to regular inspections by the varsity officials during this period

The University of Mumbai (MU) has granted autonomous status to Ramnarain Ruia College in Dadar. The decision has taken the total number autonomous  colleges affiliated to MU to nine. The university has granted academic autonomy to the college, allowing it to design its own curricula and conduct its own examinations.

However, the admission to the college, the fees charged from students and appointment and salaries of the teachers will continue to be regulated by the university and the state government. The autonomy will expire after five years and the college will be subjected to regular inspections by the varsity officials during this period.

“I have no words to describe how excited we are. This is something that we have been waiting for a long time. We deserved this status as we have proved ourselves in all the areas,” said Urmi Palan, vice-principal of the college. The college plans to introduce its own curricula from the upcoming academic year.

Close to six city-based colleges, including Vile Parle's Mithibai College, SIES College in Sion and S K Somaiya College in Vidyavihar, had applied for autonomy from MU last year, but so far only Ruia has been able to get it.
