Mumbai will get 300 new BMC parking lots by next month

Citing the space crunch in the city and the lack of infrastructure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has long been permitting drivers to park on the streets.

The state government approved the pay-and-park policy in January, after keeping it on hold for two years. Following this, civic chief Ajoy Mehta instructed the ward officers of all 24 administrative wards, as well as the roads and traffic department of civic body to identify spots that can be used as pay-and-park spaces.

The civic body currently has 92 lots set aside for street parking.

Ward officers have been tasked with identifying 300 new parking lots on Mumbai’s streets by the end of April.

According to the policy, citizens will have to brace for a steep hike of up to 200 per cent on what they pay to park at the civic lots. The policy also includes a residential permit scheme, for which island city residents will have to cough up Rs1,800 a month to park on the road. “We are drafting the tender documents. Tenders are likely to be floated for 92 public parking lots across the city, with revised parking rates by next week,” said an official from the BMC.

There are currently 29-off street parking lots. An off-street parking lot is one that has been accommodated inside a building.

“This will be an important step and will help streamline parking in the city. There are several lots that are in use. However, the users have evaded payment to the BMC. If such lots are brought under a single system, we can earn revenue by regularising them,” said a senior civic official.
