The sessions court on Saturday sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years and his 63-year-old mother for one year in jail for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old girl in 2013. The convicts, who are originally from Kolkata, were the girl’s neighbours in Andheri (East). The man, who did odd jobs, befriended the girl and raped her on the pretext of marriage. His mother approached the girl’s parents with a marriage proposal. The girl’s parents turned it down.

The mother-son duo then kidnapped the girl and took her to Kolkata in October 2013. The girl was traced and brought back a week later. The girl told the police the man allegedly raped her while they were in Mumbai.

Based on testimonies of seven witnesses, including a doctor who conducted the medical test, and the girl’s mother, the court convicted the duo.
