A couple, who had run away from their home in Uttar Pradesh, was found murdered in their rented house in Thane on Thursday morning. Vijayshankar Jagmohan Yadav, 30, and his wife Sufiya alias Priya Abrar Mansoori, 22, got married in April last year. But owing to opposition from their family, they moved to Daighar village in Thane six months ago.

The police found Yadav with his throat slit, while Sufiya was smothered to death. The police suspect the crime happened on the night of Bakrid. Their decomposed bodies have been sent to Thane civil hospital for post-mortem.

Abhishek Trimukhe, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 1, said, “The two were probably killed on Tuesday. We called up Yadav’s friend, who told about their marriage and that it was not accepted by both the families. He also told us that the woman’s family was supposed to come to Thane to meet her.”

A case of murder has been filed at Shildaighar police station under Indian Penal Code section 302 (punishment for murder).

An officer from the Thane commissionerate said: “The couple lived in fear. The man disclosed his name as Yadav, while the woman was known as Priya.”

“The neighbours told us that the couple was happy and looking forward to their child’s birth. They never fought and were cordial with others. We are investigating who visited them and how their relatives got to know about their whereabouts,” he said.
