State public works department (PWD) minister Chandrakant Patil on Thursday said all roads under the PWD — 22,000-km of roads, apart from the arterial roads of WEH, EEH and Sion-Panvel that motorists have been complaining about — will become pothole-free in a month as work on repairing them has started.

“Post December 15, any person who spots a pothole on PWD roads will get reward of Rs1,000 from this department,”Patil said, while announcing that maintenance of these roads has started. “We have also prepared a plan for 46,000-km of roads for the next two years, which includes constructing new roads, repairing old ones and their extension. The PWD will construct new roads up to 10,000km; 20,000km roads will be repaired by us while 16,000km roads will be extended,” Patil said.

The PWD has also decided to do away with the traditional ways of road repairs and have started using a ‘Jet Patcher’ machine on a pilot basis in Mumbai and Pune. These machines are known for their high speed, accuracy and good quality. Once a road is repaired, it can be opened up for use in an hour, Patil said.
