Traffic cop attacked at Khar dies after 9 days in hospital

After battling for life for over a week, traffic head constable Vilas Shinde, 51, who was attacked by two brothers in Khar (west) while on duty, passed away on Wednesday in the ICU of Lilavati Hospital.

Nine days after he was assaulted by two brothers at a petrol pump in Khar, traffic head constable Vilas Shinde, 51, died in the intensive care unit of Lilavati Hospital in Bandra (west) on Wednesday afternoon. Shinde was a resident of a BDD chawl in Worli. Originally from Satara, he is survived by a wife and two children.

The two brothers – aged 16 and 21 – who assaulted him have now been charged with murder, said senior police inspector Ramchandra Jadhav of Khar police station. Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police, traffic, said, “We will follow the laid-down procedure to ensure his family gets all benefits given to martyrs.”

Dr Atul Goel from Lilavati Hospital said Shinde died of a head injury at 1.45 pm.

“It’s unfortunate as the cop died on duty. I pay my condolences to the family “ said Dattatray Padsalgikar, police commissioner.

According to the Khar police, the incident took place at a petrol pump near Hotel Rajasthan on SV Road at 3.15 pm on August 23.

Shinde was on duty near the petrol pump, collecting details of motorists. He stopped the younger brother, who was riding a bike. The boy got into an argument with Shinde, telephoned his 21-year-old brother, who rushed to the spot and hit the constable on the back of the head with a stick. Shinde collapsed and the brothers fled, but were arrested within 24 hours.
