Two women detained with ₹14.39 lakh gold in Mumbai

Two women were intercepted at the Mumbai international airport for trying to smuggle gold jewellery and five mobile phones worth Rs16.16 lakh on Tuesday night.

Two women were intercepted at the Mumbai International airport on Tuesday night while trying to smuggle gold jewellery and mobile phones worth Rs 16.16 lakh.

According to the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), the two passengers are residents of Mira Road and were returning from Bahrain. A case has been registered.

“The women wore the jewellery and kept the mobiles in the checked-in bag. The passengers had been cleared through the green channel,” said an AIU officer. The gold jewellery is valued at Rs 14.39 lakh and there were four Samsung phones and an iPhone.

“One of them was wearing 423gm gold jewellery and had attempted to hide it in her burqa like overcoat,” said an AIU officer. The accused have not been arrested as the stolen goods did not cost more than Rs 25 lakh.

“A woman officer stopped the duo. We are investigating this further,” said the officer.

The AIU have kept a close watch at the airport as the demand for gold increases during the festive season. “As Diwali is nearing, we may see a rise in such thefts,” said the officer.
