The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) claimed it gave Mumbaiites a flood-free monsoon last year and said it would again achieve that feat this year.
In a press note, the civic body said chronic flooding spots like Hindmata, Milan subway, Nana chowk, King’s Circle and Sion Road number 24 did not witness intense water logging in 2016 despite heavy rains as compared to 2015.
In 2015, the city came to a standstill after heavy rains clogged roads and railways for two days on June 19 and 20. “Despite city receiving 61% more rainfall as compared to 2015, there were no major incidents of water logging. BMC is taking all steps to ensure that this year also is the same,” the note read.
The civic body is currently racing to finish repairs on 8.6 km of roads by June 7. It is also lagging behind in desilting of the Mithi river’s western stretch which is also expected to be completed in the next 2-3 days. In his monthly meeting held on Saturday, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta asked officials to take precautions to ensure that citizens do not face difficulties in the rainy season. BMC has also announced that 2,500 civic workers will be appointed at various places across wards to prevent flooding.

This is one of the eight pumping stations planned under the Brihanmumbai storm water drains project (Brimstowad) after heavy rains shattered the city in 2005. The BMC was planning to inaugurate the Guzderband station, aimed to reduce inundation in the western suburbs, in the month of May itself.
