DGP Dayal top contender for CBI director’s post

A Delhi boy who joined the IPS cadre in 1977, Dayal is known for his integrity, competence and managerial skills.

Dayal’s name has been shortlisted by the Centre, which is looking to replace Ranjit Sinha, said a source from the home ministry. Dayal was earlier tipped to head the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Dayal was first posted as an assistant superintendent (SP) of police in Nanded, where he served for eight months before being transferred to Nashik (rural) as additional SP. In 1982, he was first posted in Mumbai, as deputy commissioner of police. Dayal later joined the Intelligence Bureau on deputation for four years.

Dayal returned to Mumbai as the additional commissioner of police (west region) in 1993, when communal tension was high, following serial blasts in the city. He served for a few years before moving to the Special Protection Group (SPG) as deputy director.

In February 2010, he took over as additional director general (special operations) and was made Mumbai police chief in May. In 2012, he was made Maharashtra director general of police.

If Dayal is chosen to head the CBI, he could be replaced by Pravin Dixit, who is now the Director General of Police (Anti-Corruption Bureau). A reshuffle is expected in the IPS postings after the winter session of the Assembly in Maharashtra, police sources said.
