Fellow cops give a day’s salary

The entire Thane Rural police force has come out in support of the family of traffic constable Anil Aitodekar, by shelling out a day’s salary each. According to the police, there are 3,800 officers in the force. The department is hoping to eventually raise a sum of Rs 15 to 20 lakh for the family.

Aitodekar, who is survived by his father Ramakant, a retired police constable, mother, wife Shobha and two sons Shalmohn, 21, Emmanuel, 17, and daughter Diana, 19.

The family was in deep shock over Aitodekar’s death.

On Wednesday evening, Aitodekar was cremated with full police honours near his residence at Kalyan.

Scores of people from all over the area and beyond lined the route and many had tears in their eyes while bidding farewell to the police officer.

After news of Aitodekar’s death was broken to the family, his wife Shobha had to be hospitalised following a rise in blood pressure.

However, she attended his funeral later.

Vishwas Nangre Patil, superintendent of police, Thane rural, who attended the funeral, said it was shocking that there were no strong reactions from the people after the death of a traffic police officer who was doing his duty.

“Aitodekar’s family will get all support from us,” said deputy superintendent of police (Thane rural traffic) Nagesh Lohar.

“If this can happen to a traffic constable it can happen to anybody. It is shocking to see that a place like Vasai has witnessed the murder of a policeman in broad daylight,” said a police constable and colleague of Aitodekar.
