‘Illegal mining around Taloja prison stopped’

The state government on Thursday informed the Bombay high court that steps have been taken to shut down illegal quarrying and mining around the Taloja central prison.

The court had last month sought a report regarding pollution around the prison in Navi Mumbai, following a petition filed by major Ramesh Upadhyay, an accused in the September 2008 Malegaon bomb blasts case.

In a hand-written petition filed in February 2011, Upadhyay complained that he had been experiencing many physiological problems ever since he was shifted to the Taloja prison in July 2010.

Upadhyay’s lawyer Arfan Sait had argued that pollution was being caused due to quarrying and mining among other activities in the vicinity.

Additional public prosecutor Madhavi Mhatre submitted a report from the Raigad district collector informing that the circle officer in the area has sealed seven stone quarries and crusher machines and intimated CIDCO to take action against illegal mining activities.
