Mumbai: BMC plans state-of-the-art sports complex at Borivli

According to the initial plan, the stadium and the sports complex will be developed at a cost of Rs. 200 crore, spread over a 53,886-sqm plot located off SV Road, and easily accessible from the Borivli station.

Sports enthusiasts from the city’s northern suburbs may no longer have to travel to the Andheri sports complex, as the civic body is planning a similar facility at Chikuwadi, Borivli (West).

According to the initial plan, the stadium and the sports complex will be developed at a cost of Rs. 200 crore, spread over a 53,886-sqm plot located off SV Road, and easily accessible from the Borivli station.

“The suburbs lack good sports facilities. As the plot at Chikuwadi was vacant, we decided to create a multi-sport facility and a multi-sport stadium there. We are exploring revenue sources,” said SVR Srinivas, additional municipal commissioner.

Apart from cricket and football grounds, the complex will have a 400-metre running track, facility for gymnastics, a spa zone, badminton and volleyball courts, a gallery for spectators, swimming pools and indoor games facilities for snooker, billiards and table tennis, among others. Civic officials will work to make the stadium, expected to be functional by 2017, accessible to differently-abled people as well.

Planners will look to the Wembley Stadium in London, and the Wankhede Stadium in south Mumbai while designing the sports complex, said officials.
