An intense game of Pictionary ensued at Kitab Khana, Fort, on Saturday as 50 children aged 5 to 14 file in early to book their slots and then waited for Oscar award-winning Canadian animation artist Torill Kove to begin her session.
Titled Animation 101 and organised as part of the Hindustan Times Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, the workshop focused on telling stories through hand-drawn cartoons.
“My parents were architects and I have always loved art,” Kove said. “Now I get to draw every day of my life, and share my stories. It’s the best job.”

Kove began by distributing small flip books to the young attendees and demonstrating a short hand-drawn sequence of the blooming of a flower. Each participant then attempted to replicate the sequence and Kove offered feedback to each child.
“I create computer graphics at home as a hobby. After meeting Kove I am now inspired to actually grow up and become an animator,” said Mahalaxmi resident Arushi Narayanan, 13. Added Aditya Bangalore, 10, from Prabhadevi: “I love to draw, so I came to the workshop to learn more about animation. I’m now going to work on an animated story of my own. I want to create an animated film about a boy who loves to play video games — and gets sucked into one of his favourite games and then has to make his way out.”
