Pali Hill residents show the way out of city’s garbage mess

Residents have initiated a zero-garbage project in the area

After the Deonar dumping ground fire incident brought to fore the city’s poor waste management, residents of Pali Hill are showing the way ahead.

The residents have initiated a zero garbage project in their locality in coordination with the local ward office. They are also looking at composting the waste in an open space near the Pali Hill water reservoir.

To make the place garbage free, the residents have divided the area in to five regions. Around 107 buildings and 25 bungalows / row houses will be part of the project. The first phase is being carried out in 22 buildings on a pilot basis and the second phase will start from Monday.

The project has been implemented for the past 10 days and aims at covering all the buildings. The residents want to complete the project before the onset of monsoon. The residents are looking at using the manure generated for flower beds in the area.

Asif Zakaria, Bandra corporator, said, “We are coordinating with citizens groups to make Pali Hill a zero-garbage area. The ward office is helping us too. We have asked the ward officer to give us permissions to compost the waste near the Pali Hill reservoir.”

Also, according to BMC chief Ajoy Mehta’s instructions, all local ward officers are carrying out various meetings with the advanced locality managements and citizens groups to promote waste segregation. It was decided in a meeting on March 5 that the ALMs and the citizens groups should cooperate in segregating waste.

The civic chief will review the reports of the coordination meetings with the ALMS in the next review meeting.

Sharad Ughade, assistant municipal commissioner, H west ward, said, “We will also move on to other areas for segregation of waste and with cooperation of the residents and initiate zero-garbage project in the entire ward step-by-step.”
