Four people, including a 21-year-old pregnant woman and two senior citizens, were killed in a road accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway on Sunday night.

According to the police, nine people from Navje village in Palghar were heading to a hospital for the woman’s delivery when the accident took place. The group was travelling in a van that crashed into a dumper, leaving five others injured, the police said.

After Kajal Chimda went into labour, her husband and others were taking her to the Manor rural hospital, 25km away.

Around 11.05pm, when the van was passing through Worli village on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, they crashed into a dumper parked by the side.

“The vehicle was parked without any indicating lights on. The driver of the dumper had failed to put up any sign, indicating his vehicle had broken down or that it was parked. Unable to see the vehicle in the dark, the van driver crashed into it,” said an officer from Manor police station.

Chimda died on the spot from severe injuries. The other deceased have been identified as Bharti Patil, 35, Yamuna Dhodi, 75, and Bhanu Labhad, 65.

Following the accident, the police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the driver of the dumper. The driver was arrested on Monday. The police have also seized the dumper.
