Sanjay Deshmukh appointed as new vice chancellor of Mumbai University

Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, a professor of life sciences at the university, was appointed as the new vice-chancellor and will assume office from July 7, 2015.

The Mumbai University on Saturday got a new vice-chancellor.

Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, a professor of life sciences at the university, was appointed as the new vice-chancellor and will assume office from July 7, 2015.

Deshmukh will succeed Rajan Welukar, whose controversial term ends on July 6.

The search committee appointed by Maharashtra governor Ch.Vidyasagar Rao, under the chairmanship of retired justice BN Shrikrishna had given the governor a panel of names for the post.

The governor interviewed the candidates on Saturday and announced Deshmukh's name as the selected one.

Deshmukh has served as the head of the Coastal Systems Research Programme at the MS Swaminathan Research Centre in Chennai for five years and was the principal scientist at the Bombay Natural History Society between 1995 and 1999. His other stints include holding the director's post at the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini.

Deshmukh was appointed as professor of life sciences at the university in January 2005.
