Temperatures rise in Mumbai as rain plays truant

After two days of scanty rainfall in Mumbai and suburbs, the city witnessed a rise in temperatures. Further, officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said there would be scanty rainfall for the next seven days.

VK Rajeev, director, western region, IMD, said: “The rain-bearing system, which is the off-shore trough, is currently weak and will continue to be the same for the coming week.”

Night temperatures increased by almost two degrees Celsius both in Colaba and Santacruz on Monday. While Colaba recorded 28 degrees Celsius, 2.2 degrees Celsius above normal, the maximum temperature in Santacruz was 27.6 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees Celsius above normal.

Day temperatures in Colaba and Santacruz were recorded at a degree above normal at 32 degrees Celsius and 32.5 degrees Celsius respectively. Humidity levels further dropped, with 71% recorded at south Mumbai and 72% recorded in the suburbs. The 24-hour rainfall figures, between 8.30am on Sunday and 8.30am on Monday, showed 1.2mm of rain in the suburbs and no rain recorded in south Mumbai, according to the IMD website.
