Vivek Oberoi under service tax radar

The service tax department has detected alleged tax evasion by actor Vivek Oberoi to the tune of Rs40 lakh and has issued summons to him. The authorities found the actor had not registered himself with the department. Manish Pachouly reports.

The department further found that Oberoi had allegedly collected service tax amounts from producers of films and a show since February but did not deposit them with the department.

A team assigned by R Sekar, commissioner, service tax, Mumbai – II, visited Oberoi’s Juhu home on September 13, but he was not present and officials left a message asking him to appear before them.

When the actor did not appear, summons was issued asking him to meet officials on Wednesday. “He sent one of his associates who admitted to evasion of Rs 40 lakh,” a service tax official said requesting anonymity. Another summons was issued giving Oberoi a week to appear before authorities. Officials said Oberoi got himself registered with the department on Wednesday.
