The trend of recreating old classic songs in Bollywood is on the rise, but music composer Anu Malik isn’t keen to recreate all of his hits. Malik, who has recreated two of his hits, Tan Tana Tan and Unchi Hai Building, from the Salman Khan starrer film Judwaa (1998), for an upcoming project will be “extremely careful” before giving any “sort of permission” to reuse his songs.“You can’t give your songs to just anybody. They were your babies, and that’s what got you where you are. So I am going to be very careful about my songs, and if I want them to get a different treatment in upcoming films,” the 56-year-old composer.
Apart from the treatment by the new composer, Anu will also look at the star cast of the film, which would want to use his songs in their films. “Star cast is very important, for the songs to fly again. You need someone like a Shah Rukh khan or a Salman Khan, a big star in the film. They will make sure that the song is taken to a different level. Or if there is some big filmmaker, or a big banner, which wants to use them,” he says.
But he is not entirely averse to the idea. “It’s not exactly that bad a thing as some people make it out to be. Yes, majority of composers don’t have the gift of creating melodies, and hence this trend is increasing. But, it’s a good thing,” he says.
Attributing the burgeoning of the trend to the lack of creativity in the current crop of music composers, he says, “Youngsters, who weren’t even born when these classics had come out, can now listen to the same song, with minor changes, and they too can enjoy them. So from that perspective, its a good thing.”
