If playing instruments isn’t your thing and mimicking guitar solos while driving is your biggest gift, here’s something you may want to try your hands, rather mouth on.
United Kingdom based astrophysicist turned beatboxer Shlomo is scouting for local talent to make up a 10 piece beatboxing orchestra, Voctronica.
“We are looking for any kind of vocal talent whether it is singers, rappers, beatboxers, yodellers, Indian classical vocalists or any other form of skills. As long as you have the power to move people with your voice, we want to hear from you,” says the Guinness World Record holding artiste.
Since 2008, when Austrian quintet Bauchklang first performed without instruments in Mumbai and left audiences amazed, many local groove peddlers have tried their hand on this vocal percussion art form. Now, with the help of British Council and Zomba, Shlomo is ready to give India a much-needed platform.
“When I was touring India last, I met quite a few beatboxers but there’s still no real platform there. The art form still needs to develop, which is why we thought of doing something like Voctronica.”
Scanning through auditions of beatboxing aspirants from across the country, Shlomo will handpick 10 finalists for an eight-day intensive training workshop, which will be conducted by British beatboxer Testament in January 2012. Chosen ones will tour India and the United Kingdom.
Any tips for amateurs?
“Yeah, just be yourself. I know a lot of beatboxers who spend their time copying others and develop their style through imitation, which is the first step. But if you want to stand out, then you have to create your own style focus your energy on something that’s not been done before. Anything you can do that’s just yours,” says Shlomo.
