He has been in the music industry for almost two decades now and singer Kumar Sanu, who recently sang for Mahesh Bhatt’s TV show, wants the young singers to sing songs that have a melody and a meaning to it.

“They are all good and talented singers and have a great future ahead of them. They should not sing anything, just because they want to quickly earn money and become famous. They should be careful in whatever they are singing and make sure that as an artist they are not singing songs which are cheap or vulgar,” he says.
Along with lyrics, the 58-year-old singer says melody makes a song classic. “You can change the music to make it go with the current time, you can digitalise it. That’s all good. But you cannot replace it with melody, because that’s where the soul of the song is. Whatever I have sung over the years, people remember the song first by the ‘dhun’ and words,” he says.

{{/usCountry}}“These days, a music channel will play a particular song 200 or 300 times, which the movie producer declares it as a hit. Gaana force karne se koi hit ho jata hai kya. ?” he adds.

Vulgar lyrics and not “great music” were enough to keep Kumar Sanu off Bollywood for a while, but Sanu who has sung hits such as Mera Dil Bhi Kitna Pagal Hai (Saajan, 1991) and Tujhe Dekha Toh (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, 1995) has multiple projects lined up.
“I really didn’t like the songs that were being offered to me. There was no melody and no meaning to them. That’s why I have not been singing in Bollywood for a while. But now, there is a demand for meaningful songs. I have signed up for 50 films now!” he says.
