Four who robbed people on pretext of offering lift arrested in Noida

The arrests were made after the police received a tip-off about the suspicious movement of four persons in a Maruti WagonR car in Bisrakh

Four people, including a woman, who were allegedly robbing people on the pretext of offering them a lift were arrested by the police on Thursday.

The police said the driver, identified as Gautam Tyagi, failed to produce the documents related to the car.

The arrests were made after the police received a tip-off about the suspicious movement of four persons in a Maruti WagonR car in Bisrakh. Following the information, a barricade was set up for checking near Roja intersection and the car was intercepted.

Superintendent of police (rural), Gautam Budh Nagar, Suniti, said, “The car was checked and it was found that Rs1.24 lakh was stashed in bags. Five new smartphones were also recovered from them. We had concrete leads about them and they had robbed an army officer’s wife of cash on October 13.”

She said that the 58-year-old woman, Shail Mishra, the wife of a retired colonel and a resident of Gamma-II, was robbed of Rs3.5 lakh in a moving car in Greater Noida that she had hired from the Ghaziabad railway station.

Mishra, after getting down from Prayagraj Express, at Ghaziabad railway station around 7am exited the station premises accompanied by a coolie, who offered to hire her a cab to Greater Noida.

Suniti said that the complainant was called to identify the suspects and they also recovered the phone taken from her.

The accused have been identified as Gautam Tyagi, 30, Nishu Tyagi, 23, Karam Singh, 29, all residents of Baghpat and Sonam, 33, a divorced woman and a resident of Badayun.

Sonam and Gautam, who have been staying together for more than five months in Mamura, formed the gang six months ago, the police said.

The four would take the cab out early morning, offer a lift to commuters and then rob them, the police said.

Ajay Kumar Sharma, station house officer, Bisrakh, said, “We are investigating their involvement in other cases as well. The car has been recovered from them and a case has been registered. Gautam had taken a car from a friend in Baghpat on lease and was working with a cab aggregator for a while.”

He said that Sonam’s presence was to ensure that women passengers also sit in their car. The police are also investigating the role of the coolie who had hired the cab for Mishra.
