Ghaziabad: Woman climbs 30-foot hoarding, cops follow; rescued after 2 hours

According to the police, the woman climbed atop the hoarding around 1pm on Monday and was rescued around 3pm. The police had also climbed the hoarding to prevent the woman from jumping.

It took more than one and half hours of a sustained rescue effort by the police and fire department officials to bring down a 25-year-old woman who had climbed a 30-foot high advertising hoarding outside Pacific Mall in Kaushambi on Monday afternoon.

According to the police, the woman climbed atop the hoarding around 1pm on Monday and was rescued around 3pm. The police had also climbed the hoarding to prevent the woman from jumping.

“She seems to be mentally disturbed. She was speaking in a regional language that we are unable to understand. We suspect she comes from a hilly area as she was also wearing a sweater. After we got information that she had climbed the hoarding, which is more than 30 feet, we rushed nearly half a dozen personnel to rescue her,” Rojan Tyagi, station house officer, Link Road police station, said.

The police team climbed the hoarding, secured the woman, who shouted and threatened to jump, by tying her to a safety belt and brought her down with a rope.

The woman was later taken to Link Road police station where the women constables tried to enquire why she had climbed the hoarding but the police could not understand her reply. They suspect that the woman could also be from Nepal.

Officials said that the woman could have come to Ghaziabad through a long distance bus that terminates at nearby Anand Vihar and Kaushambi ISBTs. Buses to Nepal also have stops in Ghaziabad. The officials are trying to trace her family so that she can be safely handed over. No case was registered in the incident.

It is a second such case in the recent weeks in Ghaziabad. On April 18, a 21-year-old man survived an hour-long scary ‘rescue operation’ as he climbed a 30-foot unipole installed at Delhi-Saharanpur Road in Loni, Ghaziabad and demanded that the woman who had broken her engagement with him take him back. The police said that the man was heartbroken and was trying to ‘win’ back the woman.
