The Indian women’s compound team settled for silver after losing to Colombia in the gold medal match at the 2017 World Archery Championships in Mexico City on Saturday.
The Indian team comprising Trisha Deb, Lily Chanu Paonam and Jyothi Surekha Vennam were defeated (228-234) by the fourth seeded Colombian team of world record holder Sara Lopez, Alejandra Usquiano and Nora Valdez.
This was India’s fifth medal at the World Championships and each of them has been a silver. It was also the first time India won any medal in the compound team archery section at the World Championships.
The Colombian team of Alejandra, Nora and Sara -- the first woman to shoot a perfect 150 at stage 3 of the 2013 Archery World Cup in Medellin – were proud of their performance.
“I think our hearts are going to jump of our bodies,” said Alejandra. “It’s a huge happiness to give our country this new medal, a world medal and in such a beautiful country.”
“Although I lost my most wanted medal in individuals, we won this one and I think everything arrives in the right moment, when you deserve it, so this medal is hope for us to be where we used to be,” said Sara Lopez.
“We’re very happy and sure we’ll continue like this in the future.”
