Driver killed after tree falls on autorickshaw following heavy pre-monsoon rains in Pune
An autorickshaw driver was crushed to death after a tree fell on his vehicle following heavy rains on Wednesday evening. The deceased man was identified as Anil Lakshman Palaskar, 45.
“We immediately brought him to the Sassoon General Hospital for treatment, but he was declared dead on arrival by the doctors,” said assistant sub-inspector Babasaheb Jadhav of Kothrud police station.
The deceased man was driving an autorickshaw, which was purchased last month and was registered in the name of Santosh Satpute, his relative.
The body was sent for post-mortem even as the family members of the deceased man were tracked down by the police. “We had to first cut the tree and then the autorickshaw to pull him out from the wreckage. The tree was completely uprooted and it fell right on top of his vehicle, leaving no space to escape. We had to take help from the Pune metropolitan region development authority for a crane to pull out the fallen branches and other vehicles,” said fire officer Gajanan Patrudkar of Kothrud fire station.
The city witnessed at least 24 cases of tree collapse due to heavy rainfall after 5pm.
The incidents were reported from Mukundnagar, Mundhwa, Ghorpadi chowk, Sadashiv peth, Somwar peth, Narpatgir chowk, BY Kakade road, Salunkhe Vihar, Rajendranagar, Daruwala bridge, Maharshinagar, Bhusari colony among others.
