The result of Class10 examination, declared by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), has come under scanner as only 50.3% students out of the total students, who appeared in the meritorious entrance test, have managed to clear the test.
As many as 6,016 students, who had scored more than 80% marks in Class-10, from all over the state had appeared in the entrance test, out of which 2,988 students could not clear the test.
With only 3,028 students clearing the exam, the qualifying percentage has hit embarrassing 50.3. The education department was to fill 4,500 seats in as many as nine meritorious schools in the state and the entrance examination was started only this year.
Reliable sources from the department said that higher officials from the education department were worried over the result. The result was delayed by a day as it was earlier scheduled to be released on July 4.
Education officials said that the result had exposed a sorry state of education in the state and it has clearly shown that neither the teachers nor the principals were serious in providing education to the students. Officials said, “In education, Punjab has also become Bihar. A student, who has scored 80 marks fails to clear an easier test, what could be more disturbing than this?”
A 150-mark written examination was held on June 12, which included three sets each of 50 marks in English, mathematics and science for all streams. The test was based on Class-10 syllabus. As per information, checking was conducted in Mohali by local teachers. Teachers said that the question paper was so easy that they were expecting a good turnout of the students clearing the test. One of the teachers requesting anonymity said, “The paper was easy as most of the questions were picked from the question paper that had appeared in Class-10 board exam.”

Sources in the department said that most students get above 80% marks in board exams due to cheating. Project director for meritorious schools KAS Bhullar said that he did not know about the passing percentage and refused to talk further saying he was busy.
